The biggest city of the Normandy Le Havre

With a population of 175.000 inhabitants the city of Le Havre is the biggest city of the Normandy. It is located right by the river Seine and the port of Le Havre is the second largest in France after the port of Marseille. The port has an important economic function as it offers a gate from continental Europe to the United Kingdom.

The city’s history dates back to the 16th century. However, it was never free from downturns. Conflicts with the English, religious wars, natural disasters and epidemics had a negativ influx on Le Havre’s economic development. After the Allies’ invasion of the Normandy in 1944, Le Havre was severely bombed. The architect Auguste Perret dedicated himself fully to the city of Le Havre and rebuilt the city almost entirely. Thereafter, Le Havre positioned itself as an economically stable city and had an important function during the the golden age of the oil, chemical and automotive industries. In the new millennium the port was further extended in order to compete with other ports from Northern Europe. The UNESCO declared Le Havre’s city center as a World Heritage Site in 2005, which is especially interesting to guests in our apartment hotels in Le Havre’s old town.
